CRETACOLOR began in 1790 when Joseph Hardtmuth discovered that a mixture of graphite and clay produces pencil leads. This discovery has been the very foundation of the company producing pencils in Austria for over 200 years. Today, the company now known as Cretacolor produces many traditional and innovative products including pencils, leads, charcoals, unique Monolith Graphite, graphite water-soluble and an exceptional range of water media products.
